Curious Creatures
The white dragon ascends upwards through the underground city. He moves at a slow, steady pace. With the intricate maze of tunnels, corridors and pathways memorized, he makes efficient progress tracking the magical sense he felt.
“I must know. I will know. This awakening will compel the commencement of our plans, whether or not The Great One is ready for it. I am ready. We are ready. Our legion of warriors will hunger for destruction, and thirst for blood. They live for battles of war and desolation.”
“Yet what causes this awakening? Are there forces that desire to challenge us? No mortal knows our plans. What causes this awakening? I must know.”
The white dragon steadily moves through the underground city. Then the dragon stopped.
“I hear conflict.”
The white dragon listens for a moment, following the sounds and looking upward. At a slightly faster pace, the dragon navigates his way through the maze of tunnels and corridors. Then, arriving at an overlook of a much larger cavern, he sees the cause of the noises.
“Humans! There are more humans!”
The white dragon watched as two girls ran from a horde of dragon warriors, ducking into a small crevasse in the rubble.
“There are many of the mutant abominations. More than I believed was possible. Yet the humans, they run from them. They fear them. The fear the weak vermin. What curious creatures. Very young humans, not here to fight. Why are they here? Why are they children? What did I feel? There is no powerful sorceress or wizard? Only weak humans. Only weak young girls? How can—”
“The young girl has magic! I feel it. She uses…”
“She does not wield human magic?”
“Her magic feels different.”
The white dragon watched as the mutant dragon warriors fought to rip apart the rubble, trying to capture the two young girls.
“Her magic is powerful. Yet, it feels different from what I felt before.”
“Strange powers are at work.”
“I must know.”
The white dragon stared at the altercation surrounding their escape, listening to the conflict as it echoed through the tunnels of the valley.
“I will destroy them. I will control their path. They will not leave. I must learn more. There is more that is waking. I must know. None will leave this valley. I will control them, like the other vermin.”
“I will consume any hope of their escape.”
