A New Feeling
“What was that? I felt something new, powerful, different. A magical spark? What is it?”
“It cannot be the vermin in the valley. They are fools. They will thank me for destroying them. Their magic is weak. They accomplish nothing. They are an infestation. I offer them salvation, yet they refuse. The vermin seem to grow from the dirt that they are. They are as insects to be exterminated. They do not possess the intellect, the power, the control that I have. These dragons of Myrr are worthless waste. They are living animated refuse. I shall enjoy helping them leave this life. Their existence is pointless. They interfere with my work, although I will comply. I will show The Great one that I am capable, that I have power greater than any other.”
“Yet what I felt isn’t dragon, is it? What is waking? It’s different. I’ve sensed nothing like this before. I must find out. I must know what this is. Is it a threat? Or is it more power to consume? The Great One would want to know. I must find out.”
The white dragon changed his course, climbing upward through tunnels, chambers, and corridors of the buried city to get closer to what he felt. His pace quickened as he knew the feeling would fade. Maneuvering his large body and thick wings through the nooks and crannies of the rubble and structures, he followed the sensation. Then paused.
“A human… a boy. How did it get in here?”
The white dragon had never seen a human in the flesh. Even though he was aware of humans and what their civilization was like, he had never seen one face to face. The white dragon spoke a word and the room slowly illuminated. He crept around the human in the dim blue light to observe. The boy appeared to be alive, although unconscious, bruised and bleeding.
“The Order did not task me with human elimination. My task is to cleanse the valley of the dragon vermin. Why is there a human? Where did it come from? It is so small, and yet so filled with fear. Is it connected to the emerging sensation? That would be impossible. A spark could never flow through this much fear. Maybe others? How could a creature such as this ever be great? I can feel the darkness, fear, and the despair in this creature. It rules his life. Where are the great and powerful humans I have heard so much about? If this boy represents humans, I will face no opposition. This creature is nothing. I will control it, own it, make it do as I will. I find pleasure in its fear. Yet my orders, I claimed to comply. Although I have an opportunity to observe, to learn from my enemy. The others do not understand my power. If they did, they would comply with my will. I will fulfill my role, but first, I must watch.”
